As I nestle in our London hotel I feel a world away from the gunfire, tanks and mayhem we have left. Pondering the series of astonishing events leading to this haven of peace I find myself reflecting on a truly humbling experience. The lasting impression I will carry forward from Egypt is the beauty of the human spirit and a deep understanding of the interconnectedness that underlies our world.
There is no doubt this is a time of major change and all across the globe people are experiencing turmoil. Whatever happens, one thing I am sure about is the need to reach out to each other. Whether you are fighting for your rights on the streets of Cairo or sheltering from the ravages of a storm, one thing is certain: you cannot do it alone. We are all in this world together and history has repeatedly shown us that in the face of adversity we must rally together.
Adversity has shown me the greatest acts of generosity and kindness. It has shown me the very thing that makes us human. I believe this is the spirit that will carry us forward as we ride the wave of change sweeping our mighty planet.
I may have left the shores of Egypt but my thoughts are still with her people. As they face uncertainty and adversity I pray the beauty of mankind will uplift them and in their toughest moments they too may witness great acts of kindness. May they know the greater power we access through an open heart and may this spirit carry them forward, touching the lives of all so valiantly striving for freedom in this most ancient of lands.
Tomorrow we fly to Japan. It’s simply too much to think about now and so pulling the blankets around me I close my eyes. My ears search the silence for hints of danger and finding none, I slowly drift into a deep and restful sleep.
